Explanation
คมดาบ is formed from คม, “the cutting edge of a bladed tool,” and ดาบ, “sword.” It focuses on the sharpened edge rather than the whole sword blade. In battle narratives, it may also refer by extension to a sword blow or to death caused by a sword. Although คม can also mean “sharp” as an adjective, it functions as the noun “edge” in this compound.
Usage
It is used when discussing the parts of a sword and in battle scenes in historical fiction, period dramas, fantasy, and martial-arts contexts. It is not especially common in everyday conversation.
Caution
Use ดาบ for the sword as a whole and ใบดาบ for the entire blade excluding the hilt. คมดาบ refers only to the cutting edge. For the edge of a knife, use คมมีด instead.
