Explanation
ทนน้ำ combines ทน “to withstand” with น้ำ “water.” Its central image is of something that does not easily deteriorate when exposed to water. It is commonly used for paint, glue, ink, building materials, shoes, and similar items. It can modify a noun, as in สีทนน้ำ “water-resistant paint,” or serve as the predicate, as in กาวนี้ทนน้ำ “This glue is water-resistant.” ทนน้ำได้ดี means “to withstand water well.” For plants, the expanded expression ทนน้ำขัง describes the ability to tolerate standing water or waterlogged conditions.
Usage
It is used in product descriptions and specifications to discuss how well paint, adhesives, flooring, footwear, and other materials tolerate water exposure. In farming and gardening, it can also describe plants that tolerate flooding or waterlogged soil.
Caution
ทนน้ำ indicates resistance to water, not necessarily complete waterproofing. Use กันน้ำ when the focus is on keeping water out, and ไม่ซึมน้ำ when specifying that a material does not absorb water or allow it to seep through.
