Explanation

คำถาม is formed from คำ (“word” or “expression”) and ถาม (“to ask”). It can therefore be understood as the words or content used to ask something. It is a neutral, widely used noun suitable for everyday conversations, classes, meetings, interviews, tests, and questionnaires. Common combinations include มีคำถาม (“have a question”), ตอบคำถาม (“answer a question”), and ตั้งคำถาม (“raise or formulate a question”). Questions are normally counted with the classifier ข้อ: คำถามหนึ่งข้อ means “one question,” and คำถามสามข้อ means “three questions.”

Usage

It is commonly used when asking for information or inviting questions after a class or presentation. It also refers to individual questions on tests and questionnaires, as well as prepared interview questions.

Caution

คำถาม is the noun “question.” The act of asking is normally expressed with the verb ถาม. For a problem or task to solve, especially in mathematics, โจทย์ may be more appropriate; for a difficulty requiring a solution, use ปัญหา. Do not confuse คำถาม (“question”) with คำตอบ (“answer”).
