Explanation
มิใช่ combines มิ, a formal negative, with ใช่, “to be so” or “to be correct.” It is the formal or literary counterpart of the everyday ไม่ใช่. It can deny an identity or classification. The pattern มิใช่ A แต่ B, sometimes มิใช่ A แต่คือ B, contrasts two alternatives: “not A, but B.” Before a clause, มิใช่ว่า means “it is not that…” and is often used to correct an assumption or interpretation.
Usage
It is most common in formal writing, official statements, essays, speeches, literature, song lyrics, and proverbs. In ordinary conversation, speakers normally use ไม่ใช่ unless they deliberately want an elevated or dramatic tone.
Caution
Do not use มิใช่ as a general replacement for ไม่. For example, “not go” is ไม่ไป, not normally มิใช่ไป. To express that something does not exist or that someone does not have something, use ไม่มี.
