Explanation
เจ้าสาว is the standard, neutral Thai word for a bride. It is used for the woman getting married on the wedding day and in related contexts such as wedding preparations. The corresponding word for a groom is เจ้าบ่าว. Together, “the bride and groom” can be expressed as เจ้าบ่าวและเจ้าสาว or เจ้าบ่าวเจ้าสาว. Although สาว can mean “young woman,” เจ้าสาว functions as a single word meaning “bride.” Its classifier is คน, the usual classifier for people.
Usage
It is commonly used when discussing the bride at a wedding, as well as wedding clothes, photographs, and preparations. ว่าที่เจ้าสาว is often used for a woman who is expected to become a bride.
Caution
Do not use เจ้าสาว simply to mean “young woman,” “unmarried woman,” or “wife.” Use สาว for a young woman and ภรรยา for a wife.
