ดินสอกด is made from ดินสอ, “pencil,” and กด, “to press.” The idea is a pencil whose lead comes out when you press or click it. The usual classifier is แท่ง, used for long, slender objects, as in ดินสอกดหนึ่งแท่ง, “one mechanical pencil.” The lead is called ไส้ดินสอกด.
