Learning notes

Explanation

เห็บ has two dictionary senses: “tick” and “hail.” On its own, it most commonly refers to a blood-feeding tick attached to the skin. It often appears in conversations about pets, animal care, and parasite control. Ticks are counted with ตัว, as in เห็บหนึ่งตัว, “one tick.” For hail in weather-related contexts, speakers normally use ลูกเห็บ. Individual hailstones can be counted with เม็ด.

Usage

It is commonly used when checking a dog or cat for parasites, speaking with a veterinarian, or discussing tick treatments.

Caution

เห็บ does not cover every creature that might loosely be called a mite. It specifically refers to a tick. หมัด means “flea,” เหา means “louse,” and ตัวเรือด means “bedbug”; these are different parasites.
