Explanation
กำไล is a common noun for a ring-shaped ornament. By itself, it normally refers to jewelry worn around the wrist, especially a bangle or similar bracelet. To specify an ankle ornament, use กำไลข้อเท้า. The material follows the noun, as in กำไลทอง (gold bracelet), กำไลเงิน (silver bracelet), and กำไลหยก (jade bangle). The everyday verb ใส่ or the verb สวม “to wear” can be used with กำไล. As a ring-shaped object, it is commonly counted with the classifier วง.
Usage
It is commonly used when shopping for jewelry, describing what someone is wearing, or discussing gifts. It also appears in descriptions of traditional dress, dance costumes, and historical ornaments.
Caution
Do not confuse กำไล “bracelet” with the similarly spelled กำไร “profit.” Jewelry worn around the neck is normally called สร้อยคอ, while a finger ring is แหวน; these are not usually called กำไล.
