Explanation
เอว is the ordinary Thai word for the middle part of the torso between the ribs and hips. Depending on the context, it can mean the waist itself or the general waist area. It commonly appears in descriptions of body shape and movement, such as เอวเล็ก “have a small waist,” โอบเอว “put an arm around someone’s waist,” and เท้าเอว “stand with one’s hands on one’s hips.” It is also used when describing the waist or rise of clothing, as in กางเกงเอวสูง “high-waisted pants.”
Usage
It is commonly used when talking about body shape, exercise, movements involving the waist, clothing styles, and waist measurements.
Caution
เอว mainly refers to the waist rather than every area that might loosely be called the lower back or hips. Use หลังส่วนล่าง for the lower back and สะโพก for the hips or buttocks when that distinction matters. However, ปวดเอว is commonly used to mean “have pain around the waist or lower back.”
