Explanation
ถนน is a common everyday word used in conversation, signs, and addresses. It appears in phrases like ข้ามถนน “cross the road,” ริมถนน “by the road,” and กลางถนน “in the middle of the road.” For street names, it comes before the name, as in ถนนสุขุมวิท “Sukhumvit Road” or ถนนสีลม “Silom Road.” The common classifiers are สาย and เส้น, as in ถนนสายนี้ or ถนนเส้นนี้.
Usage
It is used for directions, taxi destinations, addresses, traffic conditions, and describing places in town. It is especially useful for talking about street names, crossing roads, and roads with heavy traffic.
Caution
Do not use ถนน for abstract meanings like “way” as in a method or means. Use words such as ทาง for those meanings. For a narrow side street or alley, ซอย is usually more natural.
