Explanation
จักจั่น is the ordinary, stylistically neutral Thai noun for a cicada. The word is normally used on its own, though แมลงจักจั่น may be used when the speaker wants to make it explicit that it is an insect. Common combinations include จักจั่นร้อง “a cicada sings,” เสียงจักจั่น “the sound of cicadas,” and จักจั่นเกาะต้นไม้ “a cicada perches on a tree.” Like other insects and animals, cicadas are counted with the classifier ตัว: จักจั่นหนึ่งตัว means “one cicada.”
Usage
It is commonly used when talking about seeing cicadas or hearing them in gardens, parks, and forests. It also appears in descriptions of insects, nature, and hot-weather scenery.
Caution
Do not confuse จักจั่น with จิ้งหรีด, which means “cricket.” จักจั่น refers to a cicada, typically associated with trees. To refer specifically to its sound, use เสียงจักจั่น.
