Learning notes
Explanation
The core idea is directing one's feelings toward a future that is still uncertain. The most common pattern is หวังว่า followed by a clause, meaning “hope that….” หวังว่าจะได้ plus a verb expresses a hope to have the opportunity to do something, while หวังให้ plus a person and verb expresses a hope that someone will do something. หวัง may also take a desired result, as in หวังผลตอบแทน, “expect something in return.” The usual noun meaning “hope” is ความหวัง.
Usage
Commonly used when discussing hopes about plans, dreams, success, health, or meeting again, as well as expectations about people and results. It works naturally in everyday conversation and in considerate messages such as “I hope you are well.”
Caution
For an objective prediction based on evidence, คาด is often more suitable. When expecting a particular result or standard from a person or situation, คาดหวัง may be more precise. For the noun “hope,” learners should normally use ความหวัง rather than bare หวัง.
