Explanation
ทำ means “do” or “cause,” while หาย means “go missing” or “disappear.” Together, ทำหาย presents someone as causing something to become lost, often unintentionally. When the object is stated, it normally goes between the two words: ทำ + object + หาย. For example, ทำกุญแจหาย means “lose a key.” The object may be omitted when it is already clear, as in อย่าทำหาย, “Don’t lose it.” The expression is common in everyday speech and can refer both to physical possessions and to files, photos, or other data.
Usage
Commonly used when keys, a wallet, a phone, documents, or other belongings cannot be found. It is also natural when explaining or apologizing for losing something borrowed or entrusted to you, and when a file or other digital data has accidentally disappeared.
Caution
หาย by itself describes the item as going missing: กุญแจหาย means “The key is missing.” Adding ทำ identifies someone as causing the loss: ฉันทำกุญแจหาย means “I lost the key.” The object normally appears between ทำ and หาย, not after the whole expression. Use ทิ้ง for deliberately throwing something away and ลบ for intentionally deleting digital content.
