Explanation

The core idea of หาย is that something that used to be present or ongoing is no longer there. The English translation changes with the subject: a wallet can be lost, a person can disappear, and an illness can be cured. With lost items, Thai commonly makes the missing item the subject, as in กระเป๋าหาย. To say who lost it, use ทำ + object + หาย.

Usage

This is a very common everyday word. It is used for lost belongings, people disappearing or being out of touch, signals or sounds going away, smells fading, and illnesses or pain getting better.

Caution

หาย does not state why something is gone. If you mean it was stolen, use ถูกขโมย. It is also not the normal word for someone dying; use expressions such as เสียชีวิต for that.
