Explanation
The central idea is that another possibility remains open. Between words or clauses, หรือ links alternatives, as in กาแฟหรือชา, “coffee or tea.” In a question, it often corresponds to “or” when the listener is asked to choose between stated options. At the end of a sentence, it asks the listener to confirm whether something is true. จริงหรือ, “Really?”, is especially common. Depending on context and tone, the particle may convey simple confirmation, surprise, doubt, or mild reproach. The common combination หรือว่า can introduce another choice as “or,” or begin a tentative guess with the sense of “Could it be that...?”
Usage
It is common when offering choices such as drinks, dates, or actions, and when listing alternative methods or conditions. In conversation, it is also used to confirm newly heard information or suggest another possible explanation for someone’s behavior.
Caution
For a neutral yes-or-no question, ไหม is usually more natural than sentence-final หรือ. A question that already presents alternatives with หรือ normally does not add ไหม. Conversational spellings and forms such as เหรอ, หรอ, and รึ are common, but หรือ is the standard spelling. Also, หรือ normally presents alternatives; use และ (“and”) or และ/หรือ (“and/or”) when both possibilities must be explicitly included.
