Explanation
กาแฟ is a neutral, everyday noun. When used by itself, it usually means coffee as a drink. Drinks are commonly counted with แก้ว, so กาแฟหนึ่งแก้ว means “one cup/glass of coffee.” ถ้วย can also be used when referring specifically to a cup as the container. For clarity, Thai commonly adds another noun to identify the form: เมล็ดกาแฟ means coffee beans, ผงกาแฟ means ground coffee, and ต้นกาแฟ means a coffee plant.
Usage
It is frequently used when discussing drinks at home or work and when ordering at cafés, restaurants, or street stalls. It is also used when talking about coffee beans, production, farming, and trade.
Caution
กาแฟ by itself means coffee, not a café or coffee shop; the place is called ร้านกาแฟ. In Thailand, กาแฟเย็น may be served sweetened with sugar or condensed milk. Say ไม่ใส่น้ำตาล for no sugar or หวานน้อย for less sweetness.
