Learning notes

Explanation

วันนี้ is formed from วัน, “day,” and นี้, “this,” which follows the noun it modifies. Its literal structure is therefore “this day.” Although classified as a noun, it commonly functions as a time expression. It may appear at the beginning of a sentence, as in วันนี้ฉันทำงาน (“I’m working today”), or after a verb phrase, as in เจอกันวันนี้ (“meet today”). It is a standard, neutral word used in both everyday conversation and more formal settings.

Usage

Used in almost any situation involving the current day, including plans, weather, work, health, and events. Common uses include asking วันนี้ว่างไหม (“Are you free today?”) and setting a same-day deadline, such as ส่งวันนี้ (“send it today”).

Caution

Because นี้ (“this”) follows the noun it modifies, the order is always วัน + นี้. Do not confuse วันนี้ (“today”) with ตอนนี้ (“now”) or เช้านี้ (“this morning”). To state an explicit deadline meaning “by the end of today,” use ภายในวันนี้.
