The affected person may be omitted when clear from context, as in ยานี้ทำให้ง่วง, “This medicine makes you drowsy.” The expression is standard and common in conversation, news, and explanatory writing.

Usage

It is commonly used when someone makes another person laugh, become angry, feel reassured, or take some action. It is also frequent in explanations of how weather, medicine, behavior, and other factors produce a change or result.

Caution

Do not assume that ทำให้ always implies forcing someone to act; it also describes unintended or natural causes. In an expression such as ทำให้ฉันหน่อย, “Please do it for me,” ทำ and ให้ฉัน can function separately, with ให้ marking the beneficiary. That structure is not the causative use of ทำให้.
