Learning notes
Explanation
ดีใจ is made from ดี “good” and ใจ “heart/mind,” but learners should treat it as one common emotion word meaning “glad” or “happy.” In Thai, this kind of state word can work directly as the predicate, as in ฉันดีใจมาก, “I’m very glad.” To give the reason, use ดีใจที่... “glad that...” A very useful phrase is ดีใจด้วย, used when someone else has good news, similar to “I’m happy for you” or “Congratulations.”
Usage
Use it when you are glad to meet someone, hear good news, celebrate a success, or respond warmly to someone else’s good fortune or achievement. It works well in ordinary conversation and also in polite everyday situations.
Caution
Do not use ดีใจ for “I’d be happy to...” as an offer; ยินดี is usually the better choice. For general life happiness, มีความสุข is more natural than ดีใจ.
