Explanation

The core image of ใจ is a person’s inner self. Its range includes not only emotion but also thought, understanding, intention, attention, and character. It is highly productive in compounds. Common words include ดีใจ “be glad,” เสียใจ “be sad, regret, or be sorry,” สบายใจ “feel relieved,” ตั้งใจ “intend or concentrate,” and ใจดี “be kind.” These are best learned as complete words rather than translated piece by piece. The idea of an inner center also extends to physical or abstract centers, as in ใจกลาง “the middle” and ใจความ “the main idea.”

Caution

Use หัวใจ for the physical heart in ordinary modern usage.
