Learning notes
Explanation
ขืนใจ conveys the idea of overriding a person’s ใจ—their feelings, wishes, or will. It can describe coercion in a general sense, but when it is used alone with a person as its object, it is often understood as sexual assault. The passive pattern ถูกขืนใจ commonly means “to be sexually assaulted.” It can also describe acting against one’s own feelings, especially in the form ขืนใจตัวเอง. For ordinary actions such as forcing yourself to smile despite how you feel, however, ฝืนใจ is usually more natural.
Usage
In its general sense, it appears when someone is made to do something unwillingly or when a person acts against their own true feelings. In its sexual sense, it is used in crime reports, police or court contexts, and accounts of sexual victimization.
Caution
This is a highly sensitive word. When used of an action against another person without clarifying context, it may be understood as sexual assault rather than ordinary coercion. บังคับ is safer for general compulsion, while ฝืนใจ is usually more natural for acting against your own feelings. In legal contexts, choose between “sexual assault” and “rape” according to the specific conduct and applicable legal definition.
