รัก

Explanation

รัก is the core Thai word for “to love.” It is used not only for romantic love, but also for family, children, close friends, pets, work, one’s country, and other things someone deeply cares about. The basic pattern is รัก + object, as in รักคุณ “love you” or รักลูก “love one’s child.” The common abstract noun is ความรัก, meaning “love” or “affection.” After a noun, รัก can work like “beloved” or “dear,” as in คนรัก “lover” and เพื่อนรัก “dear friend/best friend.”

Usage

It is very common in confessions, messages to partners or family, social media, songs, dramas, and expressions of affection toward close people. Adding นะ, as in รักนะ, makes it softer and warmer.

Caution

Do not use รัก for every case of “like.” For food, hobbies, or casual preferences, ชอบ is usually natural. Also, “cute” is น่ารัก, not รัก by itself. รัก can also be a plant name or refer to lacquer, but those meanings are lower priority for most learners.
