Explanation

The central human meaning is “wife.” It is the informal counterpart of ผัว (“husband”) and may also refer to a long-term female partner even when the couple is not legally married. It is extremely common in conversation but less neutral than ภรรยา. Among close friends or within a couple, it may sound natural or affectionate; with the wrong tone or in a formal setting, it can sound blunt or rough. The classifier for a wife is คน. For animals, sex is normally expressed with ตัวผู้ (“male”) and ตัวเมีย (“female”). The female/male distinction is also extended to technical parts, as in ปลั๊กตัวเมีย for a socket or female connector.

Usage

It is common in casual conversations about relationships, informal social-media posts, dramas, and song lyrics. ภรรยา is more appropriate in official documents, ceremonies, news reports, and formal conversation. For animals, it normally appears in the form ตัวเมีย.

Caution

Referring to another person's wife as เมียคุณ can sound disrespectful unless the relationship and tone make it acceptable; ภรรยาของคุณ or คุณภรรยา is safer. Do not call a woman ตัวเมีย, as this is dehumanizing and offensive. Also, เมียน้อย does not simply mean “young wife”; it usually implies a mistress or secondary-wife relationship.
