Explanation

แม่ is the ordinary, warm word for “mother” or “mom.” It is used both when talking about one’s mother and when addressing her directly. Thai kinship terms often work like personal pronouns. When a mother says แม่จะไปตลาด to her child, แม่ refers to the speaker herself—effectively “I.” When a child speaks to their mother, แม่ can function like “you.” Before an animal name, it can indicate a female parent or a female animal, as in แม่แมว “mother cat” and แม่ไก่ “hen.” It also occurs in many compounds, where it may evoke a woman, a source, or something principal. Some words, such as แม่น้ำ “river” and แม่เหล็ก “magnet,” are best learned as complete vocabulary items rather than translated element by element. The usual classifier for counting human mothers is คน.

Usage

It is extremely common when addressing one’s mother, talking about someone’s mother, or when a mother refers to herself while speaking to her child. It also appears in expressions for female animals and in many everyday compounds. Adults naturally continue to call their own mothers แม่.

Caution

แม่ covers both “mother” and the direct address “Mom,” so it can be used both to speak to one’s mother and to talk about her. Do not automatically address an unfamiliar woman as แม่. Depending on age, region, and relationship, it may sound overly familiar or inappropriate; คุณ, พี่, or ป้า may be more suitable. Also, do not translate แม่ literally as “mother” in every compound. For example, แม่น้ำ means “river,” and แม่เหล็ก means “magnet.”
