Explanation
The central idea of เพื่อน is someone who relates to another person as an equal. By itself, it normally means “friend.” In compounds with words such as ร่วมงาน or ร่วมชั้น, it can refer to a fellow member of the same workplace or class, regardless of personal closeness. The classifier for friends is คน, as in เพื่อนหนึ่งคน, “one friend.” The reduplicated form เพื่อน ๆ is commonly used for “friends” or “all my friends.” Possession can be expressed with ของ, as in เพื่อนของฉัน, “my friend,” though ของ is often omitted in conversation: เพื่อนฉัน. The reciprocal pattern เป็นเพื่อนกัน means “to be friends with each other.” In expressions such as ไปเป็นเพื่อน and อยู่เป็นเพื่อน, เป็นเพื่อน does not mean “become friends.” It means to accompany someone or keep them company.
Usage
It is extremely common in everyday conversations about friendships, introductions, school or workplace relationships, and plans with friends. It is also used when asking someone to come along or stay nearby for company.
Caution
A word containing เพื่อน does not always imply a close friendship. For example, เพื่อนร่วมงาน can simply mean a coworker, and เพื่อนบ้าน means a neighbor. Use เพื่อนสนิท for a close friend and คนรู้จัก for an acquaintance. เพื่อน does not normally mean a romantic partner; แฟน is the usual word for a boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner.
