แฟน comes from English “fan,” but in Thai one of its most important meanings is “romantic partner.” It does not mark gender, so it can mean either boyfriend or girlfriend. Common patterns include มีแฟน “to have a partner,” ไม่มีแฟน “to be single,” and เป็นแฟนกัน “to be dating.” When counting people, use คน, as in แฟน 1 คน.
Usage
It is common in casual conversations about dating, introductions, social media, entertainment, music, and sports. When it is followed by a field or object, such as แฟนเพลง or แฟนบอล, it clearly means “fan of something.”
