Learning notes
Explanation
โรงพยาบาล is formed from โรง, referring to a building or facility used for a particular activity, and พยาบาล, associated with nursing and patient care. Hospitals can commonly be counted with แห่ง, as in โรงพยาบาลสองแห่ง (“two hospitals”). โรง is also used as a classifier in some contexts. On signs and in written notices, the word is sometimes abbreviated as รพ.
Usage
It is used when talking about going to a hospital for illness or injury, being admitted, asking where a hospital is, or describing where a healthcare professional works.
Caution
A small outpatient clinic is usually called คลินิก rather than โรงพยาบาล. Also, เข้าโรงพยาบาล often means “to be admitted to the hospital,” so ไปโรงพยาบาล or ไปหาหมอ is more natural for simply going to receive medical care. พยาบาล by itself normally means “nurse” or “to nurse,” not “hospital.”
