Explanation
ใจดี combines ใจ (“heart” or “mind”) with ดี (“good”), giving it the basic image of having a good heart. It is a common, neutral compliment in everyday Thai. It can serve directly as the predicate, as in เขาใจดี (“He is kind”). When it modifies a noun, it follows the noun: คนใจดี (“a kind person”). The pattern ใจดีกับ + person means “to be kind to someone.” With เกินไป (“too much”), it can suggest excessive leniency rather than admirable kindness. It can also describe a friendly, nonaggressive animal, such as a dog that is safe around people.
Usage
It is commonly used when describing someone's personality or praising someone for treating others kindly. It can also describe a parent, teacher, or boss being lenient, or an animal being friendly and nonaggressive.
Caution
ใจดี does not cover every sense of English “gentle” or “easy.” It is not normally used for a soft color or flavor, or for an easy question. Also, สุภาพ focuses on politeness, while อ่อนโยน focuses on gentleness of manner; ใจดี primarily describes a kind heart and kind treatment of others.
