Explanation
เอง points back to the preceding person, thing, or action. In ทำเอง it means “do it oneself,” in คุณเอง it emphasizes “you yourself,” in เปิดเอง it means “open by itself,” and in แค่นี้เอง it means “just this much.” A key expression is ตัวเอง, meaning “oneself,” as in ดูแลตัวเอง “take care of oneself” and รักตัวเอง “love oneself.”
Usage
This is very common in everyday Thai. Use it when saying someone does something themselves, emphasizing who exactly did or knows something, describing something that happens on its own, or making an amount or action sound small with “just” or “only.”
Caution
เอง does not always mean “self” in the same way English reflexive pronouns do. ทำเอง usually means “do it oneself,” not necessarily “do it without permission.” If you want a blaming tone, the context or another expression must make that clear.
