เสียใจ functions as a verb describing an emotional state. It normally follows the subject, as in เขาเสียใจ, “He feels sad.” A very common pattern is เสียใจที่ followed by a clause. Its meaning depends on that clause: it may mean being sad about an event, being sorry that something happened, or regretting one’s own action. เสียใจด้วย is the usual expression for showing sympathy after someone experiences a death, breakup, failure, or other misfortune. นะ makes it warmer in conversation, while ครับ or ค่ะ adds politeness. The word combines เสีย, associated with loss or damage, and ใจ, “heart/mind,” giving the helpful image of a heart being hurt.

Usage

Caution

เสียใจ does not always function as a direct apology. When explicitly apologizing for something you did, ขอโทษ is normally the clearer choice. Because เสียใจ can express either sadness or regret, adding the reason with เสียใจที่… can prevent ambiguity.
