Thai state words do not always correspond neatly to English parts of speech, so ฉันผิด can mean “I am wrong” or “It is my fault,” while คำตอบผิด means “the answer is wrong.” A particularly useful pattern is verb + ผิด: พูดผิด means “misspeak,” เขียนผิด means “write incorrectly,” and กดผิด means “press the wrong thing.” Its usual opposite is ถูก, “correct.” Adding ความ forms the noun ความผิด, meaning an error, wrongdoing, or offense.
Usage
This word is common when checking answers or information, describing slips of speech or misunderstandings, reporting an操作 mistake, or saying that the wrong person, number, vehicle, or place was chosen. It is also used for violations of laws and agreements and when accepting blame.
Caution
Saying คุณผิด directly can sound strongly accusatory: “You are wrong” or “It is your fault.” A softer correction can use a less definite phrase such as อาจจะเข้าใจผิด, “perhaps there has been a misunderstanding.” Also learn expressions such as ผิดปกติ (“abnormal”) and ผิดหวัง (“disappointed”) as complete units rather than translating ผิด mechanically in every compound.
