Learning notes
Explanation
เขียน centers on the idea of making something visible through letters, symbols, or lines. Its object normally follows the verb: เขียนชื่อ “write a name,” เขียนจดหมาย “write a letter,” เขียนบทความ “write an article,” เขียนรูป “draw a picture,” and เขียนโปรแกรม “write a program.” It covers both the physical act of writing and the creation of a text. In computing, เขียนโปรแกรม and เขียนโค้ด are ordinary ways to say “write a program” and “write code.” It is a neutral, very common verb used in conversation, education, workplaces, and written instructions.
Usage
It is used when writing characters or essays at school, entering a name or address on a form, and producing notes, letters, or articles. It also appears when drawing pictures or eyebrows and when writing software. Common patterns include เขียน…ให้หน่อย for a casual request to write something and กรุณาเขียน… for a polite written instruction.
Caution
เขียนหนังสือ can mean “write a book,” but depending on context it may also refer to writing or learning literacy. “Read a book” is อ่านหนังสือ. วาดรูป is also a very common way to say “draw a picture.” Since เขียน by itself is usually understood as “write,” use an object such as รูป or ภาพ when you mean “draw.”
