Explanation

ที่นี่ is the basic Thai word for the speaker’s current location or a place the speaker treats as nearby. It is formed from ที่, associated with a place or location, and นี่, which indicates something close to the speaker. The combination is conceptually similar to “this place.” The same form works in อยู่ที่นี่ (“be here”), ทำงานที่นี่ (“work here”), and มาที่นี่ (“come here”). Thai does not change ที่นี่ according to whether the location is a position, the setting of an action, or a destination.

Usage

Used in everyday situations to talk about the shop, school, workplace, town, or other place where the speaker is. It is also used to tell someone to come or sit here, and to indicate a location on a map or in a picture.

Caution

When pointing to one exact spot or part, ตรงนี้ may be more natural. Use ที่นั่น for “there” and ที่ไหน for “where.”
