อาจจะ

Explanation

อาจจะ is a standard way to talk about something that is possible but not confirmed. It normally appears after the subject and before the action or state being presented as uncertain. For a negative possibility, use อาจจะไม่ before the verb or state: this means “might not” or “may not.” อาจ can also be used by itself with essentially the same meaning. อาจจะ is common and natural in conversation. It is not limited to future events; it can also express uncertainty about a present state or fact. The expression itself does not mark politeness, so ครับ or ค่ะ may be added at the end when appropriate.

Usage

Commonly used when discussing uncertain weather, plans, someone’s actions, possible causes, or whether information is true. It is also natural when giving a tentative answer about plans or intentions. It works in both everyday conversation and writing.

Caution

The position of ไม่ changes the meaning. อาจจะไม่ไป means “might not go,” while ไม่อาจไป is a more formal expression meaning “cannot go.” When you consider something fairly probable rather than merely possible, น่าจะ or คงจะ may be more appropriate.
