เชียงใหม่ is a proper name used for both the city of Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai Province. In everyday conversations about travel, tourism, transportation, or where someone lives, เชียงใหม่ usually means the city or its urban area. Use จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ when you need to specify the entire province. Although ใหม่ means “new” when used by itself, เชียงใหม่ functions as a single place name and should not be translated word by word.
