Explanation

อาหาร is a common, neutral noun with a wider range than any single English equivalent. Depending on context, it can mean food in general, a prepared dish, a meal, or someone’s diet. Adding a country or region gives the name of a cuisine, as in อาหารไทย, “Thai food.” อาหารเช้า, อาหารกลางวัน, and อาหารเย็น mean breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are counted with มื้อ, so สามมื้อ means “three meals.” อย่าง or ชนิด can be used when counting kinds of food. The word also appears in expressions such as อาหารสัตว์, “animal feed,” and figurative compounds such as อาหารสมอง, “food for thought,” but ordinary food and meals remain its core meaning.

It is widely used when discussing meals at home, ordering at restaurants, describing favorite foods or national cuisines, and talking about nutrition, health, or diet. Especially useful combinations include ทำอาหาร “cook,” สั่งอาหาร “order food,” and ร้านอาหาร “restaurant.”

Caution

In casual conversation, กินข้าว is often more natural for simply saying “eat” or “have a meal.” กินอาหาร is also correct, but it can sound more general or descriptive and is common in discussions of food types, health, and nutrition. Also, เมนู refers to a menu or a specific menu item, whereas อาหาร refers to the food itself.
