Explanation
ร้าน is a very common noun for a place of business. It combines easily with a product or service to name a type of shop, as in ร้านอาหาร “restaurant,” ร้านกาแฟ “coffee shop,” ร้านหนังสือ “bookstore,” and ร้านตัดผม “barber shop / hair salon.” It is not limited to retail stores; it also covers places to eat and places that provide services. The same word can also be used as the classifier when counting shops or restaurants.
Usage
Use ร้าน when talking about shopping, eating out, travel, directions, business hours, or the type of place you are going to. It is the normal word for “this shop,” “a nearby restaurant,” “what time the store opens,” and similar everyday situations.
Caution
For an entire department store or shopping mall, ห้าง or ห้างสรรพสินค้า is usually more natural than ร้าน. Individual shops inside that mall can still be called ร้าน.
