Learning notes

Explanation

In modern everyday Thai, ห้าง usually means a department store or shopping mall where people shop, eat, or watch movies. Although it is commonly associated with the longer term ห้างสรรพสินค้า, its everyday use is not limited to traditional department stores. แห่ง can be used when counting such facilities, as in ห้างสองแห่ง (“two retail complexes”). The commercial-firm sense is most useful to learners as part of fixed terms such as ห้างหุ้นส่วน.

Usage

It is common in conversations about going out to shop, eat, or see a movie, especially in expressions such as ไปห้าง (“go to the mall”) and เดินห้าง (“walk around the mall”). The business-entity sense appears mainly in company names, signs, and registration documents.

Caution

ห้าง alone does not strictly distinguish a department store from a shopping mall. When precision matters, use ห้างสรรพสินค้า for a department store and ศูนย์การค้า for a shopping center. Using ห้าง by itself to mean a business firm may be misunderstood as “mall” in ordinary conversation.
