Learning notes
Explanation
ร้าน means “shop” and หนังสือ means “book,” so the compound literally means “book shop.” It is a neutral, standard term used naturally in conversation, signs, and writing. When counting bookstores, ร้าน is the usual classifier, as in ร้านหนังสือสองร้าน, “two bookstores.” แห่ง may also be used when treating one as a place or establishment. Books themselves are counted with เล่ม.
Usage
It is commonly used when buying books, asking where a bookstore is, arranging a meeting place, or describing local shops. Modifiers such as ออนไลน์ “online” and มือสอง “secondhand” can be added to specify the type of bookstore.
Caution
หนังสือ by itself means “book,” not “bookstore.” A library is ห้องสมุด, not ร้านหนังสือ, because ร้านหนังสือ refers to a business that sells books.
