Explanation

This expression combines มา, “to come,” with จาก, “from.” Its basic pattern is subject + มาจาก + starting point, built around the image of something coming from a particular origin. The starting point can be a physical place, a person's hometown or background, a source of information, a word's origin, a material, or a cause. Consequently, คุณมาจากไหน can mean either “Where did you come from?” or “Where are you from?” depending on the situation. It is a neutral, very common expression used in both everyday conversation and explanatory writing.

Usage

It is commonly used in introductions to state where someone is from and in travel or delivery contexts to identify a point of departure. It is also used to discuss sources of information, word origins, materials, and the causes of problems, smells, or conditions.

Caution

มาจาก followed by a place can mean either that someone has traveled from that place or that they are originally from there. When the distinction matters, use a more explicit expression such as เดินทางมาจาก for travel or เป็นคน followed by a place for personal origin. Do not normally insert เป็น before มาจาก in a statement such as “I'm from Japan.”
