For birth, common patterns include เกิดที่ + place, “be born in,” and เกิดปี + year, “be born in a particular year.” Events are expressed with เกิด + event or เกิดขึ้น. Two essential causal patterns are เกิดจาก + cause, “result from,” and ทำให้เกิด + result, “cause” or “give rise to.” The word is common in both everyday conversation and formal informational writing.

Usage

Use เกิด when talking about where or when someone was born, reporting accidents, fires, or problems, and describing the emergence of feelings or changes. เกิดอะไรขึ้น (“What happened?”) is extremely common in conversation, while เกิดจาก (“result from”) and ทำให้เกิด (“cause”) frequently appear in explanations and reports.

Caution

เกิด normally takes the person being born or the event arising as its subject. To say that a mother gives birth, use คลอด or ให้กำเนิด. To express that something causes a result, the standard pattern is ทำให้เกิด + result rather than using เกิด alone as an ordinary transitive verb.
