Explanation
วันเกิด is formed from วัน (“day”) and เกิด (“to be born”), so its literal sense is “the day of birth.” In ordinary use, it usually means the birthday that comes around each year. To identify whose birthday it is, use วันเกิดของ followed by the person, as in วันเกิดของแม่ (“Mom’s birthday”). The standard birthday greeting is สุขสันต์วันเกิด (“Happy birthday”).
Usage
It is common in conversations with family and friends, at birthday parties, when discussing cakes or presents, and in birthday messages on social media. It is also used when asking for someone’s birthday during registration or check-in.
Caution
วันเกิด usually means “birthday” and does not necessarily include the birth year. Forms or official procedures that require the complete date of birth commonly use วันเดือนปีเกิด. A birthday party is called งานวันเกิด, not simply วันเกิด.
