After a noun, อย่าง can introduce an example or representative type, as in คนอย่างเขา, “a person like him.” It also serves as a classifier for distinct kinds or items, as in อาหารสามอย่าง, “three dishes.” It is essential in combinations such as บางอย่าง, “something,” ทุกอย่าง, “everything,” and หลายอย่าง, “many things.” In อย่างไร, “how,” and อย่างนี้, “this way,” it refers to a way or condition. The pattern อย่างที่ + clause means “as” or “just as,” as in อย่างที่บอก, “as I said.”

Usage

อย่าง is a basic word used across everyday conversation and formal writing. Caution

อย่าง is not a universal equivalent of “like” or “so that.” When expressing purpose, as in “so that someone can do something,” Thai normally uses เพื่อให้ or another purpose construction rather than อย่าง. Its role also changes by position: อย่างรวดเร็ว describes how something happens, while อาหารสองอย่าง counts two dishes or kinds of food. When used about people, phrases such as คนอย่างเขา categorize someone as a certain type and may sound critical or contemptuous depending on context and tone.
