Explanation

The central idea of ตัวอย่าง is something concrete that represents or demonstrates a broader idea, whole, or quality. In an explanation, it means an “example.” For products, materials, and laboratory substances, it can mean a “sample” or “specimen.” When referring to conduct or character, it means a “model” or an “example to follow.” ยกตัวอย่าง means “give an example,” while ตัวอย่างเช่น introduces one with “for example.” A common pattern for describing a role model is เป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีให้…, meaning “be a good example for….” Placed directly after a noun, as in ครูตัวอย่าง (“exemplary teacher”), it describes someone or something as a model of its kind. Examples and samples can be counted with ตัวอย่าง itself, as in หนึ่งตัวอย่าง (“one example/sample”) and สองตัวอย่าง (“two examples/samples”).

Usage

It is common in lessons, conversations, writing, and presentations when giving concrete examples. It is also used for product samples, research or medical specimens, and people or behavior presented as good models. It is a neutral, widely used word suitable for both everyday and formal contexts.

Caution

To introduce an example with the meaning “for example,” normally use ตัวอย่างเช่น rather than ตัวอย่าง alone. Also, ตัวอย่าง by itself does not always imply a good example. When it is used as a standalone noun for a role model, wording such as ตัวอย่างที่ดี (“a good example”) makes the positive meaning clear.

Differences from similar words

1 example synonyms

  • กรณี means a case or situation and focuses on a particular set of circumstances. ตัวอย่าง focuses on something presented to illustrate an explanation or idea.

2 sample synonyms

  • ของทดลอง usually means a trial product intended for someone to try. ตัวอย่าง is broader and can also refer to display samples, laboratory samples, and specimens.

3 model synonyms

  • ต้นแบบ refers to an original model, prototype, or source on which later things are based. ตัวอย่าง need not be the original; it can simply be something worth following.

  • แบบอย่าง explicitly means a model or standard worthy of imitation and can sound somewhat more formal. ตัวอย่าง is more general and often takes wording such as ที่ดี (“good”) when it means an example to follow.

4 exemplary synonyms
