Explanation

หัวใจ literally refers to the physical heart. By extension, it can mean the emotional heart—someone's feelings, love, or deepest wishes—and figuratively the essential part of an idea, activity, or system. A useful pattern is หัวใจของ + noun, meaning “the heart of” or “the key to” something. When a classifier is needed, ดวง is used, as in หัวใจหนึ่งดวง. In ordinary conversation, however, the word is rarely counted.

Usage

It is used literally in health and medical contexts. In conversations about love, relationships, songs, and encouragement, it refers to feelings or one's deepest emotional self. In business, education, and general explanations, หัวใจของ... commonly identifies the key or essential part of something.

Caution

หัวใจ cannot freely replace ใจ. In fixed words such as เข้าใจ (“understand”), สนใจ (“be interested”), and ดีใจ (“be glad”), ใจ must not be changed to หัวใจ. For the literal center of a place, ใจกลาง is usually more direct. Calling a place หัวใจ gives it the figurative sense of a vital hub or “beating heart.”
