Explanation
The core idea of ฟัง is deliberately directing your attention to sounds or spoken words. The object normally follows the verb, as in ฟังเพลง “listen to music” and ฟังครู “listen to the teacher.” It commonly combines with other words to describe comprehension: ฟังออก means being able to make out or understand what is said, while ฟังรู้เรื่อง and ฟังเข้าใจ mean understanding the content through listening. ฟังดู describes an impression based on what you hear. For example, ฟังดูดี can mean that something sounds good, including an idea or proposal rather than only an actual sound.
Usage
It is used throughout everyday life for listening to conversations, explanations, music, news, radio, and other audio. When the object is a parent, teacher, or another authority figure, it can also mean listening to that person by following their advice or instructions.
Caution
Distinguish deliberate listening from simply hearing. Use ฟัง when someone actively listens, and ได้ยิน when a sound is perceived. Also, ฟัง followed by a person can mean either listening to what that person says or obeying them, depending on context.
