Learning notes

Explanation

ได้ยิน is a common everyday verb used when a sound or information reaches you through hearing. Although it can be analyzed as ได้ + ยิน, learners will find it more useful to treat ได้ยิน as a single verb meaning “hear.” The ได้ in this word should not be translated separately as “can.” Sounds commonly follow the pattern ได้ยินเสียง… (“hear the sound of…”). For reported information, ได้ยินว่า… means “hear that…,” while ได้ยินมาว่า… emphasizes that the information was heard from another source.

Usage

It is frequently used in conversations, phone calls, online meetings, and noisy places to check whether a voice or sound can be heard. ได้ยินไหม (“Can you hear me?”) and ไม่ได้ยิน (“I can't hear”) are especially common. It is also used when passing on news, plans, opinions, or rumors learned by word of mouth.

Caution

Distinguish ได้ยิน from ฟัง. Use ฟัง for deliberately listening, as in “listen to music,” and ได้ยิน for perceiving a sound, as in “hear music.” ไม่ได้ยิน means “cannot hear” or “did not hear.” To say that someone did not listen, use ไม่ได้ฟัง. Also, ได้ยินว่า… reports something heard from others, so the information may not be confirmed.
