The basic pattern is “the information being checked + หรือเปล่า.” It can follow a noun predicate, a description, an action, a plan, or an expression of intention. หรือ means “or,” while เปล่า supplies the negative alternative in this construction. Thinking of the whole phrase as “Is that so, or not?” makes its structure easy to remember. It is extremely common in everyday speech. For a polite question, male speakers can add ครับ and female speakers can add คะ: หรือเปล่าครับ or หรือเปล่าคะ.

Usage

It is used in everyday conversation to check someone’s identity, a condition, whether an action has been completed, or a person’s plans and intentions—for example, “Are you Japanese?”, “Have you eaten yet?”, or “Are you going tomorrow?”

Caution

It normally comes after the information being checked. หรือ by itself means “or,” so learn หรือเปล่า as a complete question expression. Although conversational, it can be used politely by adding ครับ or คะ.
