Learning notes

Explanation

ตีนกบ is formed from ตีน (“foot”) and กบ (“frog”). The name comes from the fin’s resemblance to a frog’s webbed foot and the way it helps propel a swimmer through the water. Use the classifier คู่ for a pair, as in ตีนกบหนึ่งคู่ (“one pair of fins”). Use ข้าง when referring to a single fin. Although ตีน can sound rough when used by itself for a person’s foot, ตีนกบ is an established, neutral name for this piece of equipment.

Usage

This word is commonly used at pools, beaches, dive shops, and equipment-rental counters when discussing swimming, snorkeling, freediving, or scuba diving. It also appears in instructors’ directions about putting on or removing fins.

Caution

Do not use ตีนกบ for an animal’s anatomical fin; that is ครีบ. ตีนกบ normally refers to swimming equipment worn on the feet.
