Learning notes

Explanation

กี่ชั่วโมง consists of กี่ (“how many”) and ชั่วโมง (“hour”). กี่ takes the place where a number would normally appear and asks for the number of hours. For example, หนึ่งชั่วโมง means “one hour” and สองชั่วโมง means “two hours.” Replacing the number with กี่ produces กี่ชั่วโมง, “how many hours.” It commonly follows a verb or the phrase ใช้เวลา, as in ใช้เวลากี่ชั่วโมง (“How many hours does it take?”) and ทำงานกี่ชั่วโมง (“How many hours do you work?”). When the context is clear, กี่ชั่วโมง? can also stand alone. It is standard in both everyday conversation and more formal situations.

Usage

It is used to ask about travel time or the duration of work, study, sleep, exercise, and similar activities. It is also common when asking how long someone has waited or how many hours have already passed.

Caution

กี่ชั่วโมง asks about a length of time, not a clock time. Use กี่โมง for “what time” and กี่นาที when asking for a duration in minutes.
